Hi,
it is probably a matter of debate, but I would like to encourage you to further improve the user interface by simplifying the access to the HOME airport and to ALTERNATE airfields. Currently one has to perform 3 steps to get to ALTERNATES (Open Main Menu, Select Nav, Press Alternates).
Several ideas on how to implement the above suggestions:
a) Add a HOME, ALTERNATES button directly to the main menu, the functions are important enough
b) or add two individually configuarble buttons to the main menu, this way everyone can decide for themselves what's important to them
c) Similiar to the AUX screen - add a screen on which a different task can be set e.g. on Final Glide and Cruise one can keep the main task and on the seperate screen one could display a different task e.g. to HOME or any other nearby field. It takes only a gesture left/right to switch between the two back and forth.
....
If you like you can also debate the topic in the mailing list to better get a feel what other might prefer / think.
Thanks for at least considering the ideas.

Luke & Alex,
The direction we're heading is to "single tap" the InfoBoxes?. The feedback we got from user testing was that users wanted to click on the InfoBoxes?, so this should be a good solution.
For example, tapping on the InfoBox? for:
MC - would allow you to increase/decrease your MC
Alternate 1 - would should something having to do with Alternates, possibly the Alternate screen
etc.
We're still defining the behaviours for clicking on each of the InfoBox? types.
What do you think of this approach to the issue presented in this ticket?

Currently hitting Enter on the ALTERNATES INFOBOXES will popup the alternates list. Try the left/right arrows on the ALTERNATES INFOBOXES also.
I plan to make this functionality more discoverable by making the single click on the ALTERNATES INFOBOXES show additional information immediately. Same with all other infoboxes. We're still in the design phase of that feature.

I personally thought as well on using the infoBoxes as menu buttons.
This could smarten up some operations significantly
Just some thoughts :
- Altrn 1&2 : List with alternates (Like described)
- Fin Dist : Task editor with current task
- Time Flt : Start time & Sunset
- Next Wpt : Detailed wpt info
- Near AS : Airspace Dialogue
- You could toggle speed and altitude between different units (km/h <-> kt, m <-> ft). Helpful when you exceptionally don't sit in a glider :-)

the MCPanel.png design does not address Auto MC. It also does not address the expressed desire to have 'large touch zones' for this task.
We did a lot of user research on this and came up with a fullscreen design. http://xcsoar.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=317

AutoMC can be accessed via the additional menu

At the moment there are several user interactions necessary in flight which should have an easier access. MC settings, wind settings and arming waypoints are some examples. In my opinion it is not a solution to place buttons in a more prominant place because this will not align to the current interaction structure.
XCSoar already has a means of easy access to certain actions using gestures. I would suggest building on this and using an "h" gesture for home or an A gesture for alternates.
Another alternative might be to add a double tap action to info boxes. The alternate info boxes could for example open the alternates dialog. This would be a means of easy, intuitive and somewhat configurable access without changing the current interaction structures or cluttering the screen with further elements.
